[music plays throughout] [andrew leopold]hello, humber – welcome to the annual humber college iron chef competition. today is battle chocolate. the secret ingredient, chocolate, must be used in all of the chef's culinary creations. [michael teune]we have eight teams of four students. uh, all of them have to usethe chocolate, like we said earlier, with- in three different courses –
app, main, and dessert. uh, we did let them know the proteins in advance, but we haven't let them know any of the ingredients. so, they're making all their adjustments on the fly. i have high expectations and hope for 'em. we use this as our poolingfor our competitions that we use throughout the school year. so, uh, from these ones, they can go on to compete nationally. last year, the student who won this one went on to compete in vancouver,
um, so we're- have high hopes for these students, and we're looking for the best. [andrew] tanya, talk to us about what we're doing today. [tanya] well, we're doing a variety of, uh, dishes here and proteins – 'course, using chocolate in every course. but we're using, uh,scallops today, uh, some, uh, whole chickens that we're butchering down, and, um, a wonderful dessert that's a surprise. [andrew]what's the, the biggest challenge
or the biggest pressure point about an iron chef competition? [tanya]i think it's keeping organized, keeping, uh, your timelines in,in track, and, and making sure everyone's,you know, meeting the- meeting the requirements that, that are-that we- are needed to make the recipe. [andrew] we're just awaitingthe arrival of the judges and the presentation of the first plates. eight teams are competing today, four students per team. we got first and second year, and apprentice students.
the heat is rising here at humber college. [boing] [stjefan]i'm in the culinary apprentice program. so, instead of me being a full-time student, i'm a part-time student. so, i come here on mondays, and in this semester, i'm gonna be coming mondays and tuesdays. and i go and i work the rest of the week. so, most of my week is, uh, developed in work,
but other than that, i'm here at school, learning cook and everything, then i go to my workplace, and i take what i learned here, and i bring it to my workplace. [woman]i'm in the culinary management program. [andrew] and how are you enjoying it?[woman] i love it. i can't see myself doing anything else but cooking. [shonah chalmers] right now, all of themare focusing on getting their apps done. hopefully, they've broken their teams so some of them are working on the main and getting to the dessert.
this is what's successful, is if they have a good plan of attack for today. it looks like we have a great bunch of teams today. uh, also, we're gonna have some spectators. some of the family and friends are gonna come in, 'cause it's really all about showcasing what they've learned here so far. [michael] alright, guys,we're in our last five minutes. keep your wits about you. [john placko]i'm quite impressed.
i think the flavour combinations have been interesting and unique, some really nice tasting dishes, and some really interesting presentation. we've got a really good bunchof students here competing today. [sergio shidomi] i have seen some very creative, uh, dishes. um, looking forward to see what, uh, the other students, uh, have to bring it to the table. [george taluri]so far, so good. i'm impressed with taste and presentation.
[andrew] the humber college2013-2014 iron chef competition is almost at a close. eight teams came to battle today in battle chocolate. 32 competitors giving it their all through three courses, trying to wow our panel of three culinary expert judges. the only question left is whose cuisine reigns supreme. [michael]okay, so without further ado, first prize drumroll, anybody?[drumming] there we go. team number five.[crowd] yeah! [cheers] [applause]
[michael]congratulations. [man]it feels great, you know. we came here,we knew what we were doing, our, uh, our team member, lauren, she had the work plan ready, everything ready for us,we just had to execute whatever that was on the paper, get it done on the right time, and get every course in its own appropriate order, and get it done the way it's supposed to be. [woman 2]it's great, feels great.
it just, i just wanna go further and see what's gonna happen. [woman 3] i was- i felt so proud, like, with my team, because this is our first time working together, and we can pull it off really well.
